ADVICE ON PICKING UP KITTENS

7 Dec 04 - We have many emails from well-meaning people who pick up up newborn or very young kittens.

While we understand that many people feel sorry for these small, meowing kittens, removing them can often cause much more harm than leaving them there. Kittens that young often need their mothers in order to survive and removing them may jeopardise the kittens chances of survival.

Please bear in mind the following :-

1. Look for the mother cat - kittens are often meowing FOR their mothers, who may have wandered off to look for food. The mothers may be gone for a few hours so waiting around for ten minutes and not seeing a mother does NOT necessarily mean the kitten or kittens have been abandoned.

2. Do not touch the kittens unless the kitten/kittens are in danger or if you are sure the kitten/kittens have been abandoned - Touching the kitten or kittens may result in the mother cat rejecting the kitten or kittens if she returns when she smells your scent on the kitten/kittens.
