Cat Culling: What You Can Do To Help
6 Jun 03 - We urge all who wish to help to read this article. We are very disappointed that the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority of Singapore's Stray Cat Rehabilitation Scheme has been cancelled. Cat Welfare Society has been swamped with hundreds of emails and calls from the public on how they can help. As such, if you are concerned and would like to do something to make a difference, you may consider taking the following actions:
1. See the Member of Parliament (MP) of your constituency at a Meet-the-People session, and politely tell him how you feel and ask him to write a letter to the relevant authorities on your behalf.
2. Take the tamer stray cats off the streets and either bring them into your home or board them at a pet farm/hotel/shop. It doesn’t have to be many, even 1 or 2 would help.
3. Send a polite email to the Minister of National Development, Mr Mah Bow Tan (mah_bow_tan@mnd.gov.sg) and copy it to the Prime Minister, Mr Goh Chok Tong (goh_chok_tong@pmo.gov.sg), Deputy Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong (lee_hsien_loong@mof.gov.sg), and Ngaim Tong Tau, CEO of AVA (ngiam_tong_tau@ava.gov.sg). Please remember to add the underscores (_)in the email addresses.
In your email, you might like to ask for:
a) The intensified culling to stop
b) The reactivation of the Stray Cat Rehabilitation Scheme, under which stray cats are sterilised to control their population because this method is both effective and humane
c) The authorities to consider allowing cats into HDB flats so that more stray cats can be taken into homes
Please include your name, NRIC No. and telephone number. This will show that you are serious about your concerns and it will lead them to take your letter seriously.
4. Join in the petition/polls at:
http://www.petitiononline.com/cwsasdhr/petition.html
5. Let the press, radio and television media know how you feel, but as always in a rational and polite way.
6. Tell your town council officials politely that you hope they will speak with you before removing any of the sterilised cats. Tell them you will be happy to help them with mediations.
7. Let people know about sterilisation, that it is cheaper, more effective and humane. Give them examples from your own neighbourhood where it has worked.
8. Help us in either funds or expertise to set up a low-cost sterilisation clinic.
Donations
Quite a number of you have also asked how you can go about making a donation to Cat Welfare Society. To do so, please make out a cheque to Cat Welfare Society and send it to:

Other Help
