SCRS Page on AVAs Website Suddenly Removed

13 Jun 03 - The June 3rd issue of the Straits Times carried an article by Sharon Loh commenting on the government’s sudden decision to stop the Stray Cat Rehabilitation Scheme (SCRS). She cited a number of interesting facts that suggest the arbitrary and contradictory nature of this decision.

In her article, Ms Loh reported that the AVA had claimed, in their letter to the Straits Times Forum on 30th May, that the SCRS was stopped because it was not working well. Ms Loh pointed out the incongruity of this statement by relating how, at a media reception just a few week's earlier, the AVA had praised the merits of the SCRS. Ms Loh also pointed out that, in their website, www.ava.gov.sg , the AVA described the SCRS as having shown good results in areas where good rapport has been built up between the volunteers and the authorities. The fact that the SCRS has been adopted by all 16 Town Councils (compared to only one when the scheme was first started in 1998) seems to indicate that the Town Councils are also willing to give it a chance to work. Coincidentally, soon after Ms Loh’s article was published, the SCRS page was removed from AVA's website. In fact, the website no longer contains any information about the SCRS. Indeed, it seems as if the SCRS had never existed. This is misleading to the public, because, according to the AVA, the SCRS has only been “suspended” and not scrapped. To add to the confusion, the AVA had in March this year printed a set of pubicity brochures on the SCRS which provide information to the public on how the scheme works and its long term benefits. On behalf of all those who have put in so much time, effort and funds into the SCRS, we hope the confusion can be sorted out soon and the SCRS given a chance to show everyone that it can succeed.
