WHO Sees No New Threat From Bird Flu in Cats

20 Feb 04 - WHO has come out with reports to say that the death of two cats in Thailand from bird flu does not signify any new increased danger to humans.

WHO on its website at says that infection in cats is not considered likely to enhance the present risks to human health. Nor is it considered likely to influence the future evolution of the outbreak in humans in any significant way.

WHO goes on to state that a number of mammals are susceptible to natural infection with influenza viruses in that are purely avian in their genetic make-up. Of these species only the pig has significance for human health. This is because pigs can be infected by both the avian and human influenza viruses and can be a mixing vessel resulting in a new influenza virus subtype.
