Cat Welfare Society Needs Immediate Donations
16 Jun 04 - Cat Welfare Society is dangerously low on funds. We have enough to last us for only one more month at the current rate of expenditure. As anyone who has seen our annual report knows, we have consistently kept our expenses low, with administrative costs amounting to only 8% of total expenses. But unfortunately, our overall expenses have increased.
Last year, CWS incurred a deficit of $ 36 ,000. Sterilisation costs increased by 60% while food and litter for the cats also went up by 400%. These increases were due to the sudden termination of the Stray Cat Rehabilitation Scheme. We had to pick up the slack when the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority stopped sterilising, so we sterilised 400 more cats than the year before, an increase of 50%. We also had to intensify our fostering and adoption efforts in order to get more cats off the streets. Medical costs arising from rescue work also went up by 200% compared to the year before. This was because during SARS last year, more people who were helping our street cats, came to us when they found injured cats that needed medical attention.
Given the dire straits of our finances, Cat Welfare Society is sorry to announce that we will no longer be able to reimburse (neither partially or fully) sterilisation and medical costs for rescue work. We hope this will not be a permanent situation, but it will very much depend on the funds we are working hard to raise. Our reimbursement policy will be reviewed periodically as our financial situation changes. Meanwhile, Cat Welfare Society will continue to arrange for discounted rates for sterilisation and medical fees at supportive vet clinics, for caregivers registered with us. We ask for your understanding in this matter and hope that you will continue in your efforts to help our street cats.
We also appeal to you to help us continue our work for the cats with a generous donation. If you would like to donate, please make your cheque or money order out to Cat Welfare Society and send it to: Cat Welfare Society Orchard P.O. Box 65 Singapore 912303
