PLEASE KEEP YOUR CAT INDOORS

12 Dec 03 - We have noticed an increase in the number of cats being reported missing this month and would like to advise all cat owners in Singapore to keep their pet cat/s indoors at all times.

Vets have stated that cats make excellent apartment pets and do not need to roam. If you are concerned that your pet will be bored in your home, or get less exercise, you can get many cheap and simple toys to entertain your cat with. Most cats spend eighteen hours out of every day asleep – it is safer to let them sleep safely inside your own home. Allowing your cat to roam exposes it to many dangers: 1. being caught by pest controllers who may be operating in your neighbourhood to round up stray cats 2. being trapped by neighbours who dislike the presence of cats 3. getting lost 4. being abused 5. meeting with an accident 6. getting into fights with other cats and risk being injured/diseased Also, a roaming cat may cause many inconveniences to your neighbours, such as defecation outside a neighbour’s door, caterwauling, stealing food, etc. It has been shown that cats that live indoors can live on average of eleven years, but cats that live outdoors only live an average of two and a half. So, for the interest of the community at large, and more importantly, for the safety of your pet cat, please let it stay indoors at all times.
