Start Your Own Trap & Neuter

How to Start a Trap-Neuter-Return-Manage Programme in your Neighbourhood

Every neighbourhood you have come across where community cats are healthy and well cared for did not happen by chance. It has been the effort of an individual or a group of individuals to nurture and sterilise the cats.

The Cat Welfare Society started out as a self-help network of caregivers who turned their estates' cats around with much of their own time and resources. This has not changed, although more support is now available through programmes like the Stray Cat Sterilisation Programme.

Now more than ever, through Facebook pages and groups, it is easier for people in the same estate to connect with each other and work together to help cats. There is no better time to start!

A successful Trap-Neuter-Return-Manage programme is one where the cats are fed responsibly and sterilised. To start one:

  • Befriend your neighbourhood feeders to start a group from the ground up
  • Connect with others through Facebook or contact info@catwelfare.org to let us know your efforts, we may be able to connect you with groups active in your area
  • Get to know your neighbourhood feeder's routine or start a feeding routine to build trust with the cats
  • If the cats are friendly, try to trap them with a carrier and some cat food as a lure.
  • If not, engage a professional trapper. Many volunteers rely on one (see below for contacts).
  • As a resident and a voice for your cats, let your Town Council know of your efforts.

Humane neighbourhood, happy cats, simply starts with each and everyone of us.
